Air Ambulance Medical Device Design and Engineering

Johnston Engineering designed and delivered a specialized air ambulance medical device to safely load patients on and off Helicopter Air Ambulances.

The HAA BACKSAVER is a simple attachment to existing gurneys. We designed it to overcome a common problem: gurneys do not rise high enough and can’t get close enough to meet the helicopter. The HAA BACKSAVER lifts the patient to the same level and extends outward to meet the helicopter deck. When every moment counts for the life of a patient, the HAA BACKSAVER makes it simple for HAA workers to move a patient quickly and safely.

Our Contribution:

Johnston Engineering provided concept development engineering design, structural analysis, component sourcing, and build to take this project from a concept sketch to a fully functioning, FDA-approved medical device.
